Bhagavad Gita 5.18

5.18 Krishna to Arjuna

vidyāvinayasaṃpanne brāhmaṇe gavi hastini | śuni caiva śvapāke ca paṇḍitāḥ samadarśinaḥ ||

In a brahmin endowed with learning and humility, in a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater, the wise see the same.

This verse teaches equal regard for every being. The old social labels it uses, including 'dog-eater' (shvapaka), reflect the hierarchy of its time and must never be used to rank or demean anyone; the point is that the wise see no such difference in worth.

Meaning today and context

Wisdom shows in how we see others: the same worth and the same inner reality in the most honoured person and the most despised, in humans and animals alike. Status, birth and labels do not change what a being is.

Krishna says the wise see with an equal eye a learned and humble brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater.
