Bhagavad Gita 7.20

7.20 Krishna to Arjuna

kāmaistaistairhṛtajñānāḥ prapadyante'nyadevatāḥ | taṃ taṃ niyamamāsthāya prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā ||

Those whose knowledge is carried off by this or that desire turn to other gods, following this or that observance, led by their own nature.

This verse does not belittle other traditions or anyone's form of worship; the next verses say Krishna himself steadies each person's faith.

Much of what we pursue, even in religion, is shaped by what we want. It helps to ask honestly what is really driving our worship or our choices.

Krishna says people whose discernment is carried off by various desires turn to other deities, following particular rules according to their nature.
