Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.3.19

1.3.19 Upanishadic seer

so'yāsya āṅgiraso'ṅgānāṃ hi rasaḥ | prāṇo vā aṅgānāṃ rasaḥ | prāṇo hi vā aṅgānāṃ rasaḥ | tasmādyasmātkasmāccāṅgātprāṇa utkrāmati tadeva tacchuṣyati | eṣa hi vā aṅgānāṃ rasaḥ ||

He is Ayāsya Āṅgirasa, for he is the essence of the limbs. Breath is the essence of the limbs; yes, breath is the essence of the limbs. Therefore from whatever limb breath departs, that limb dries up. For this is the essence of the limbs.

Meaning today and context

Life is not in the parts by themselves but in what flows through them. The same is true of a family or a body of work: without that living current, things dry up.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.19 explains the name Ayāsya Āṅgirasa again: breath is the essence of the limbs, and any limb it leaves withers.
