Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.3.3

1.3.3 Upanishadic seer

Then they said to breath, 'Chant the udgītha for us.' 'So be it,' said breath, and chanted for them. Whatever enjoyment there is in breath, it chanted for the gods; whatever good it smells, it kept for itself. The demons knew: 'Through this chanter they will overcome us.' They rushed at it and pierced it with evil. That evil is this: whatever improper thing one smells. That is that evil.

Meaning today and context

Each sense, when it works for its own pleasure, can be pulled toward what is not good for us. The story asks us to notice where our senses lead.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.3: the same happens to breath in the nose, the sense of smell; it keeps the good smelling for itself and is pierced with evil.
