Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.7.20

3.7.20 Yajnavalkya to Uddalaka Aruni

yo manasi tiṣṭhanmanaso'ntaro yaṃ mano na veda yasya manaḥ śarīraṃ yo mano'ntaro yamayatyeṣa ta ātmāntaryāmyamṛtaḥ ||

He who dwells in the mind yet is other than the mind, whom the mind does not know, whose body the mind is, who controls the mind from within: he is your self, the inner controller, the immortal.

Meaning today and context

The mind does not know what lies behind it. You can watch your thoughts because you are more than your thoughts; that is a steadier place to stand when the mind is restless.

Brihadaranyaka 3.7.20. Yajnavalkya continues for Uddalaka Aruni: the inner controller in the mind.
