Gargi, whoever in this world makes offerings, performs sacrifices and practises austerities for many thousands of years without knowing this imperishable, for him all that comes to an end. Gargi, whoever departs from this world without knowing this imperishable is pitiable. But whoever departs from this world knowing this imperishable, Gargi, is a true brahmana.
'Brahmana' here means one who knows the imperishable, not a caste; the verse never ranks anyone by birth. 'Pitiable' is not a judgement to pass on anyone who has died.
Meaning today and context
Effort, ritual and discipline without understanding have a limit; their results run out. What makes a life rich is not how much we did, but whether we came to know what is lasting. Here 'brahmana' is defined by that knowing, not by birth.
Brihadaranyaka 3.8.10. Yajnavalkya tells Gargi what knowing or not knowing the imperishable means for a human life.
