'On what are you and your self founded?' 'On the out-breath (prana).' 'On what is the out-breath founded?' 'On the in-breath (apana).' 'On what is the in-breath founded?' 'On the diffused breath (vyana).' 'On what is the diffused breath founded?' 'On the up-breath (udana).' 'On what is the up-breath founded?' 'On the middle breath (samana).' 'That self is not this, not this (neti neti). It is ungraspable, for it is not grasped; indestructible, for it is not destroyed; unattached, for it does not cling; unbound, it does not tremble, it is not harmed. These are the eight abodes, the eight worlds, the eight gods, the eight persons. That person who separates these persons, brings them back together and goes beyond them: I ask you about that person of the Upanishads. If you do not explain him to me, your head will shatter.' Shakalya did not know him, and his head shattered. Robbers even carried off his bones, mistaking them for something else.
Shakalya's head shattering is a story about staking one's word in an ancient debate; it is not a threat or a curse on anyone who questions, doubts or does not know. Asking questions is welcomed throughout this text.
Meaning today and context
The self is 'not this, not this': not any object we can grasp, so it cannot be broken, stuck or harmed. Shakalya knew every list but not the one who knows the lists, and the story ends his learning in emptiness.
Brihadaranyaka 3.9.26. Shakalya asks what Yajnavalkya and his self rest on; Yajnavalkya traces it through the five breaths to the self that is 'not this, not this', then asks Shakalya his own question. Shakalya cannot answer and, as the debate's stake had warned, his head shatters (story).
