3.9.28.1 Yajnavalkya to The brahmins

tānhaitaiḥ ślokaiḥ papraccha | yathā vṛkṣo vanaspatistathaiva puruṣo'mṛṣā | tasya lomāni parṇāni tvagasyotpāṭikā bahiḥ ||

He questioned them with these verses: 'As a tree, a lord of the forest, so truly is a man. His hairs are its leaves, his skin its outer bark.

Meaning today and context

The sage sets up an image: a person is like a tree, part by part. The point of the comparison comes a few verses later, when he asks what happens when the tree is cut down.

Brihadaranyaka 3.9.28.1. Shakalya is dead and the brahmins have not dared to question him, so Yajnavalkya now questions them in verses, beginning with the likeness of a man to a tree.
