Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.9.28.5

3.9.28.5 Yajnavalkya to The brahmins

retasa iti mā vocata jīvatastatprajāyate | dhānāruha iva vai vṛkṣo'ñjasā pretya sambhavaḥ ||

Do not say 'from semen', for that is produced from one who is living. A tree that grows from seed, after it has died, comes into being again directly [from its seed].

Meaning today and context

Children and descendants carry life forward, but that is not an answer to what happens to the one who dies. The verse pushes past the biological answer to a deeper one.

Brihadaranyaka 3.9.28.5. Yajnavalkya rules out the easy answer 'from semen': that comes only from a living man, whereas a tree grown from seed springs up again even after it has died.
