Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.9.4

3.9.4 Yajnavalkya to Shakalya

katame rudrā iti | daśeme puruṣe prāṇā ātmaikādaśaḥ | te yadāsmāccharīrānmartyādutkrāmantyatha rodayanti | tadyadrodayanti tasmādrudrā iti ||

'Which are the Rudras?' 'These ten vital powers in a person, and the self as the eleventh. When they leave this mortal body, they make people weep. Because they make people weep (rodayanti), they are called Rudras.'

Meaning today and context

The text names, without judgement, the tears that come when a life departs; mourning is part of being human.

Brihadaranyaka 3.9.4. Shakalya asks which are the Rudras; Yajnavalkya explains them as the vital powers of a person.
