Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.3.11

4.3.11 Yajnavalkya to Janaka

tadete ślokā bhavanti | svapnena śārīramabhiprahatyāsuptaḥ suptānabhicākaśīti | śukramādāya punaraiti sthānaṃ hiraṇmayaḥpuruṣa ekahaṃsaḥ ||

On this there are these verses: Striking down the bodily self by sleep, he, sleepless, looks down on the sleeping [senses]. Taking the bright seed of light, he returns again to his place: the golden person, the lone swan.

Meaning today and context

Even when body and senses rest, awareness is not switched off; it watches and returns. There is a part of us that never sleeps and is never lost.

Brihadaranyaka 4.3.11: Yajnavalkya quotes verses: in sleep the self, itself unsleeping, watches over the sleeping body and returns, the golden person, the lone swan.
