4.3.12 Yajnavalkya to Janaka

prāṇena rakṣannavaraṃ kulāyaṃ bahiṣkulāyādamṛtaścaritvā | sa īyate'mṛto yatrakāmaṃ hiraṇmayaḥ puruṣa ekahaṃsaḥ ||

Guarding the lower nest with breath, the immortal roams outside the nest. The immortal goes wherever he wishes: the golden person, the lone swan.

Meaning today and context

The body is pictured as a nest that breath keeps safe, while the self is free. We are cared for and housed by the body, but not confined to it.

Brihadaranyaka 4.3.12: the verses continue: guarding the body with breath, the immortal self roams outside it in dream wherever it wishes.
