4.3.14 Yajnavalkya to Janaka

ārāmamasya paśyanti na taṃ paśyati kaścaneti | taṃ nāyataṃ bodhayedityāhuḥ | durbhiṣajyaṃ hāsmai bhavati yameṣa na pratipadyate | atho khalvāhurjāgaritadeśa evāsyaisa iti | yāni hyeva jāgratpaśyati tāni supta iti | atrāyaṃ puruṣaḥ svayaṃjyotirbhavati | so'haṃ bhagavate sahasraṃ dadāmi | ata ūrdhvaṃ vimokṣāya brūhīti ||

People see his playground; him no one sees. 'One should not wake him abruptly,' they say, 'for it is hard to cure a person to whom he does not find his way back.' Others say, 'Dream is just his waking state, for whatever he sees awake he sees asleep.' But there this person is his own light. [Janaka:] 'I give you, sir, a thousand [cows]. Tell me what lies beyond this, for liberation.'

The remark about waking a sleeper reflects an old belief; it is not medical advice. For sleep problems, see a doctor.

Meaning today and context

We see the contents of experience, the 'playground', and miss the one who experiences. Janaka's eagerness shows how a real seeker responds to a teaching: wanting to go further, not stopping at the first answer.

Brihadaranyaka 4.3.14: Yajnavalkya says people see the self's playground, never the self; he rejects the view that dream is just waking, and repeats that the person is self-luminous. Janaka, pleased, offers a thousand cows and asks to hear more, for liberation.
