4.3.20 Yajnavalkya to Janaka

tā vā asyaitā hitā nāma nāḍyo yathā keśaḥ sahasradhā bhinnastāvatāṇimnā tiṣṭhanti | śuklasya nīlasya piṅgalasya haritasya lohitasya pūrṇāḥ | atha yatrainaṃ ghnantīva jinantīva hastīva vicchāyayati gartamiva patati | yadeva jāgradbhayaṃ paśyati tadatrāvidyayā manyate | atha yatra deva iva rājevāhamevedaṃ sarvo'smīti manyate | so'sya paramo lokaḥ ||

He has channels called hita, as fine as a hair split a thousandfold, filled with white, blue, tawny, green and red. When [in dream] it seems that people are killing him or overpowering him, that an elephant is chasing him, or that he is falling into a pit, he is imagining, through ignorance, the very fears he sees while awake. But when, like a god, like a king, he thinks, 'I alone am this; I am all,' that is his highest world.

The channels and colours are an ancient account of the body, not medicine. Recurring nightmares, especially after trauma, deserve care; speak to a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Many of our fears in dreams, and in waking too, are the mind replaying what it already fears; the text calls this ignorance. The sense of being whole and one with everything is described as our highest state.

Brihadaranyaka 4.3.20: Yajnavalkya describes the fine channels (hita) of the body and how in dream a person, through ignorance, imagines the fears of waking; when he feels 'I am all this', that is his highest world.
