4.3.22 Yajnavalkya to Janaka

atra pitāpitā bhavati mātāmātā lokā alokā devā adevā vedā avedāḥ | atra steno'steno bhavati bhrūṇahābhrūṇahā cāṇḍālo'caṇḍyālaḥ paulkaso'paulkasaḥ śramaṇo'śramaṇastāpaso'tāpasaḥ | ananvāgataṃ puṇyenānanvāgataṃ pāpena | tīrṇo hi tadā sarvāñśokānhṛdayasya bhavati ||

Here a father is no father, a mother no mother, the worlds no worlds, the gods no gods, the Vedas no Vedas. Here a thief is no thief, the killer of an unborn child no killer, a chandala no chandala, a paulkasa no paulkasa, a renunciant no renunciant, an ascetic no ascetic. He is not followed by good, not followed by evil, for then he has crossed beyond all the sorrows of the heart.

Chandala and paulkasa were caste labels of the time; here they are named only to say that all such labels fall away. Worth is never by birth, and these words must never be used to rank anyone. Being 'beyond good and evil' describes the self in that state, not a licence to do harm; actions still have consequences.

Meaning today and context

Beneath every role and label, honoured or condemned, there is a self that none of them defines. Knowing this can heal the heart's sorrows and the shame we attach to our labels.

Brihadaranyaka 4.3.22: Yajnavalkya says in that state every role and label falls away, father, mother, thief, outcaste, monk, and the person, untouched by good or evil, has crossed all the sorrows of the heart.
