The power to smell is not destroyed in deep sleep; it is only that nothing separate is there. Each sense points back to one awareness that does not perish.
Brihadaranyaka 4.3.24: one of a series of eight parallel statements on deep sleep. Yajnavalkya explains that in deep sleep the self does not smell, not because its smelling is lost, but because there is no second thing to smell.
