When it does not taste there, it is in fact tasting even as it does not taste. For the tasting of the taster is never lost, since it is imperishable. But there is then no second thing, other than it and separate from it, that it could taste.
Meaning today and context
The power to taste is not destroyed in deep sleep; it is only that nothing separate is there. Each sense points back to one awareness that does not perish.
Brihadaranyaka 4.3.25: one of a series of eight parallel statements on deep sleep. Yajnavalkya explains that in deep sleep the self does not taste, not because its tasting is lost, but because there is no second thing to taste.
