Take a man among men who is successful and prosperous, lord over others, most fully endowed with every human enjoyment: that is the highest bliss of human beings. A hundred blisses of human beings make one bliss of the ancestors who have won their world. A hundred blisses of those ancestors make one bliss in the world of the gandharvas. A hundred blisses in the gandharva world make one bliss of the gods by works, who reach godhood through rites. A hundred blisses of the gods by works make one bliss of the gods by birth, and of a person learned in the Veda who is upright and not struck down by desire. A hundred blisses of the gods by birth make one bliss in the world of Prajapati, and of a learned person who is upright and not struck down by desire. A hundred blisses in Prajapati's world make one bliss in the world of Brahman, and of a learned person who is upright and not struck down by desire. And this is the highest bliss. This is the world of Brahman, Your Majesty, said Yajnavalkya. [Janaka:] 'I give you, sir, a thousand. Tell me what lies beyond this, for liberation itself.' At this Yajnavalkya grew afraid: 'This king is clever; he has driven me out of every position.'

'Learned in the Veda' (shrotriya) means learning and conduct, never birth or caste. Valuing contentment is not a reason to neglect fair earning or care for one's family.

Meaning today and context

Even the best human life of wealth and power is a tiny fraction of the joy the text describes, and the person who is upright and free of craving is said to share the higher joys already. Contentment and integrity, not more possessions, are the way up.

Brihadaranyaka 4.3.33: Yajnavalkya gives the scale of bliss, from the richest human upward in hundredfold steps to the world of Brahman, each matched by the bliss of a learned person free of desire. Janaka offers another thousand; Yajnavalkya fears the clever king will draw out all he knows.
