Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.3.35

4.3.35 Yajnavalkya to Janaka

tadyathānaḥ susamāhitamutsarjaṃ yāyādevamevāyaṃ śārīra ātmā prājñenātmanānvārūḍha utsarjaṃ yāti | yatraitadūrdhvocchvāsī bhavati ||

As a heavily loaded cart goes creaking, so this bodily self, with the knowing self riding on it, goes creaking when a person is breathing his last.

This passage describes dying as the text sees it. For someone grieving or thinking about death, it is about the Self, not an invitation to die; if you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The text looks plainly at the struggle of dying without denying it. Seeing it honestly can make us gentler with the dying and with our own fear of death.

Brihadaranyaka 4.3.35: Yajnavalkya begins describing death: as a loaded cart creaks, the bodily self, carrying the knowing self, groans as breath rises at the end.
