Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.3.37

4.3.37 Yajnavalkya to Janaka

tadyathā rājānamāyantamugrāḥ pratyenasaḥ sūtagrāmaṇyo'nnaiḥ pānairavasathaiḥ pratikalpante'yamāyātyayamāgacchatīti | evaṃ haivaṃvidaṃ sarvāṇi bhūtāni pratikalpanta idaṃ brahmāyātīdamāgacchatīti ||

As, when a king is coming, the formidable officers, magistrates, charioteers and village heads wait for him with food, drink and lodging, saying, 'Here he comes, here he arrives,' so all beings wait for one who knows this, saying, 'Here comes Brahman, here he arrives.'

This passage describes dying as the text sees it. For someone grieving or thinking about death, it is about the Self, not an invitation to die; if you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The text pictures the one who knows the Self as welcomed everywhere, like a king. It suggests that such a person is not a stranger anywhere, in this life or beyond.

Brihadaranyaka 4.3.37: as officials prepare food and lodging for an arriving king, all beings prepare for the one who knows this, saying 'Here comes Brahman.'
