As, when a king is about to depart, the formidable officers, magistrates, charioteers and village heads gather around him, so at the time of death all the vital powers gather around this self, when a person is breathing his last.
This passage describes dying as the text sees it. For someone grieving or thinking about death, it is about the Self, not an invitation to die; if you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
At death the powers of life withdraw and gather inward, like attendants around a departing king. The image gives dignity to dying: the person is not simply fading but departing, accompanied.
Brihadaranyaka 4.3.38: as officials gather around a departing king, all the vital powers gather around the self at the time of death, when breath rises at the end.
