[Janaka:] 'Which is the self?' [Yajnavalkya:] 'It is this person made of consciousness among the vital powers, the light within the heart. Remaining the same, he travels through both worlds; he seems to think, he seems to move about. For when he becomes dream, he passes beyond this world, beyond the forms of death.'
Meaning today and context
Thinking and moving happen, but the one who is aware of them only 'seems' to think and move. Knowing yourself as that steady awareness, not the passing thoughts, brings a quiet stability.
Brihadaranyaka 4.3.7: Janaka asks which is the self; Yajnavalkya describes it as the person of consciousness, the light within the heart, who moves through waking and dream while staying the same.
