Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.3.8

4.3.8 Yajnavalkya to Janaka

sa vā ayaṃ puruṣo jāyamānaḥ śarīramabhisampadyamānaḥ pāpmabhiḥ saṃsṛjyate | sa utkrāmanmriyamāṇaḥ pāpmano vijahāti ||

When this person is born and takes on a body, he is joined with evils. When he departs, at death, he leaves those evils behind.

This passage describes dying as the text sees it. For someone grieving or thinking about death, it is about the Self, not an invitation to die; if you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The faults and burdens that cling to us belong to our embodied life, not to the core of who we are. That core is not stained by them.

Brihadaranyaka 4.3.8: Yajnavalkya says the person takes on evils when born into a body and leaves them behind at death.
