This person has just two places: this world and the other world. Dream, the third, is the junction between them. Standing in that junction, he sees both places, this world and the other. And as he has access to the other world, so, entering by that access, he sees both evils and joys. When he falls asleep, he takes a portion of this all-containing world, takes it apart himself, builds it up himself, and dreams by his own radiance, by his own light. There this person becomes his own light.
Meaning today and context
In a dream there is no sun or lamp, yet everything is seen. That shows that awareness itself is the light. Our minds also build worlds from what we take in each day, so it matters what we take in.
Brihadaranyaka 4.3.9: Yajnavalkya describes the dream state as the junction between this world and the next; in dream the person builds a world from waking material and becomes self-luminous.
