When this self grows weak and sinks, as it were, into bewilderment, the vital powers gather around it. Taking into itself these particles of light, it goes down into the heart. When the person in the eye turns back and away, one no longer knows forms.

At the end, the powers we rely on, sight and the rest, draw back into something more central. The text invites us to ask what that centre is, which the senses only served.
Brihadaranyaka 4.4.1. Continuing from 4.3, Yajnavalkya describes to King Janaka what happens when a person is dying: the senses withdraw into the heart.
