Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.4.11

4.4.11 Yajnavalkya to Janaka

anandā nāma te lokā andhena tamasāvṛtāḥ | tāṃste pretyābhigacchatyavidvāṃso'budhā janāḥ ||

Joyless are those worlds called, covered in blind darkness. To them, after death, go people who have not known and not awakened.

Not a threat about anyone's fate after death, and not to be used to frighten the grieving about a loved one. For distress, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

A life lived without ever asking who one is can end up joyless however full it looks. The verse is a call to wake up while there is time.

Brihadaranyaka 4.4.11. The verses continue: those who die without awakening go to joyless worlds.
