4.4.18 Yajnavalkya to Janaka

prāṇasya prāṇamuta cakṣuṣaścakṣuruta śrotrasya śrotrammanaso ye mano viduḥ | te nicikyurbrahma purāṇamagryam ||

Those who know the breath of breath, the eye of the eye, the ear of the ear and the mind of the mind, they have grasped the ancient, primal Brahman.

Meaning today and context

Behind every act of seeing, hearing and thinking is an awareness that is not itself seen. Noticing that awareness is the beginning of self-knowledge.

Brihadaranyaka 4.4.18. A verse: those who know what lies behind breath, sight, hearing and mind know the ancient Brahman.
