Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.4.8

4.4.8 Yajnavalkya to Janaka

tadete ślokā bhavanti | aṇuḥ panthā vitataḥ purāṇo māṃ spṛṣṭo'nuvitto mayaiva | tena dhīrā apiyanti brahmavidaḥ svargaṃ lokamita ūrdhvaṃ vimuktāḥ ||

On this there are verses: 'There is a narrow, ancient path stretching far; it has touched me, I have found it myself. By it the wise, the knowers of Brahman, go up from here to the heavenly world, set free.'

Meaning today and context

The path to freedom is old and narrow, but it can be found by a person for themselves. Inner truth has to be discovered, not just inherited.

Brihadaranyaka 4.4.8. Yajnavalkya quotes verses to Janaka on the ancient, subtle path by which knowers of Brahman go free.
