Now Yajnavalkya had two wives, Maitreyi and Katyayani. Of the two, Maitreyi was one who discoursed on Brahman, while Katyayani then had only such understanding as women commonly had. Now Yajnavalkya was about to take up another way of life.
The phrase about Katyayani having 'a woman's understanding' reflects its time and is not the app's view; it must never be used to belittle women's minds. Maitreyi in the same verse is a woman who seeks Brahman. Yajnavalkya first settles his property between his wives before leaving; this is not advice to abandon a spouse or family. For most people renunciation means inner detachment.
