4.5.11 Yajnavalkya to Maitreyi

As from a fire kindled with damp wood clouds of smoke spread out separately, so, my dear, the Rig Veda, the Yajur Veda, the Sama Veda, the Atharvangirasa, histories, ancient lore, sciences, Upanishads, verses, aphorisms, explanations and commentaries, sacrifice and oblation, food and drink, this world and the next, and all beings, are the out-breathing of this great Being. It is from this one alone that all these are breathed out.

Meaning today and context

All learning, ritual and the world itself flow out effortlessly from one source, like breath. Knowledge of many things is a branch; the root is one.

Brihadaranyaka 4.5.11. Yajnavalkya tells Maitreyi that all the Vedas, sciences, rituals and worlds are the breath of the Great Being, like smoke from a fire of damp wood.
