Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.5.3

4.5.3 Yajnavalkya to Maitreyi

sā hovāca maitreyī | yannu ma iyambhagoḥ sarvā pṛthivī vittena pūrṇā syātsyāṃ nvahaṃ tenāmṛtāho3 neti | neti hovāca yājñavalkyaḥ | yathaivopakaraṇavatāṃ jīvitam | tathaiva te jīvitaṃ syāt | amṛtatvasya tu nāśāsti vitteneti ||

Maitreyi said: 'Sir, if this whole earth, filled with wealth, were mine, would I become immortal by it, or not?' 'No,' said Yajnavalkya. 'Your life would be just like the life of people who have every comfort. But of immortality there is no hope through wealth.'

Not a rejection of earning or saving; the verse is about what wealth cannot give.

Meaning today and context

Money can make life comfortable, and that is not nothing. But it cannot answer the deepest questions or still the deepest fears; for that one has to look elsewhere.

Brihadaranyaka 4.5.3. Maitreyi asks Yajnavalkya whether the whole earth full of wealth would make her immortal; he answers that wealth gives a comfortable life but no hope of immortality.
