The priestly power forsakes whoever regards the priestly power as apart from the self. The royal power forsakes whoever regards the royal power as apart from the self. The worlds forsake whoever regards the worlds as apart from the self. The gods forsake whoever regards the gods as apart from the self. The Vedas forsake whoever regards the Vedas as apart from the self. Beings forsake whoever regards beings as apart from the self. Everything forsakes whoever regards everything as apart from the self. This priestly power, this royal power, these worlds, these gods, these Vedas, these beings, this whole world: all this is this self.
Priestly and royal power are named as social functions of the time, never as ranks by birth.
Meaning today and context
When we treat people and things as separate from us, as mere objects, we end up estranged from them. Seeing them as part of our own being changes how we hold them.
Brihadaranyaka 4.5.7. Yajnavalkya tells Maitreyi that whatever one regards as separate from the self forsakes one, for all of it is the self.
