Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 5.1.1

5.1.1 Upanishadic seer

pūrṇamadaḥ pūrṇamidaṃ pūrṇātpūrṇamudacyate | pūrṇasya pūrṇamādāya pūrṇamevāvaśiṣyate | khaṃ brahma | khaṃ purāṇam | vāyuraṃ kham | iti ha smāha kauravyāyaṇīputraḥ | vedo'yaṃ brāhmaṇā viduḥ | vedainena yadveditavyam ||

That is full; this is full. From the full, the full comes forth. When the full is taken from the full, the full alone remains. Brahman is space. Space is the primordial. Space is that in which the wind moves: so said the son of Kauravyayani. This is the Veda, the brahmins know; by it one knows what has to be known.

For someone grieving: the verse does not deny the pain of loss; mourning is natural. If distress is overwhelming, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Wholeness is not used up by giving or diminished by loss. Whatever is taken from you, what you most deeply are stays whole, and the world in front of you is part of that same fullness.

Brihadaranyaka 5.1.1, the 'purnam adah' invocation: the full comes from the full and the full remains; it adds a saying of Kauravyayani's son that Brahman is space.
