atha hainaṃ manuṣyā ūcurbravītu no bhavāniti | tebhyo haitadevākṣaramuvāca da iti | vyajñāsiṣṭā3 iti | vyajñāsiṣmeti hocuḥ | datteti na āttheti | omiti hovāca vyajñāsiṣṭeti ||
Then the humans said to him, 'Please teach us, sir.' He spoke to them the same syllable 'da' and asked, 'Have you understood?' They said, 'We have understood. You told us: give (datta).' 'Yes,' he said, 'you have understood.'
Giving here is generosity within one's means, not a demand to give beyond what one can afford or to anyone who asks for money.
Meaning today and context
For humans, inclined to hold on to what they have, the lesson is to give. Sharing what we have loosens the grip of greed and connects us to others.
Brihadaranyaka 5.2.2. The humans ask Prajapati for teaching; he says 'da', and they understand it as 'give' (datta).
