Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.4.8

1.4.8 Upanishadic seer

tadetatpreyaḥ putrātpreyo vittātpreyo'nyasmātsarvasmādantarataraṃ yadayamātmā | sa yo'nyamātmanaḥ priyaṃ bruvāṇaṃ brūyātpriyaṃ rotsyatītīśvaro ha tathaiva syāt | ātmānameva priyamupāsīta | sa ya ātmānameva priyamupāste na hāsya priyaṃ pramāyukaṃ bhavati ||

This self is dearer than a son, dearer than wealth, dearer than everything else, for it is more inward. If a person calls something other than the self dear, and someone tells him, 'You will lose what you hold dear', it may well turn out so. One should meditate on the self alone as dear. For one who meditates on the self alone as dear, what is dear does not perish.

The 'self' here is the innermost Self, not selfishness, and the verse does not ask anyone to care less for their child or family. If you are grieving a loss, the grief is real; this verse does not dismiss it.

Children, money and possessions can be lost, and a love that rests only on them lives in fear of that. The verse points to what is innermost as the dearest thing, which no loss can take. It does not ask us to love our children less, but to rest our deepest security where it cannot be taken away.

Brihadaranyaka 1.4.8: the self is dearer than a son, than wealth, than anything else, because it is innermost; one who holds only the self as dear does not lose what is dear.
