As a lump of salt thrown into water dissolves into the water itself, so that it cannot be picked out again, yet from wherever one takes [a sip] it is salty, so truly, my dear, this great being, endless, boundless, is nothing but a mass of consciousness. Arising out of these elements, it vanishes along with them. After death there is no [particular] awareness; this is what I say, my dear.' So said Yajnavalkya.

Meaning today and context

Like salt in water, awareness is present everywhere though it can't be held as an object. What we call 'my' separate identity is tied to body and circumstance; the consciousness it rests on is not.

Brihadaranyaka 2.4.12. Yajnavalkya's image of salt dissolved in water: the great being is pure consciousness through and through; the individual rises from the elements and vanishes into them, and after death there is no separate awareness.
