Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 2.4.13

2.4.13 Yajnavalkya to Maitreyi

sā hovāca maitreyī atraiva mā bhagavānamūmuhanna pretya saṃjñāstīti | sa hovāca na vā are'haṃ mohaṃ bravīmi | alaṃ vā ara idaṃ vijñānāya ||

Maitreyi said: 'Right here, sir, you have bewildered me by saying that after death there is no awareness.' He said: 'I am not saying anything bewildering, my dear. This is quite enough for understanding.'

Meaning today and context

It is fine to say 'I'm confused' to a teacher. Honest confusion is often where real understanding begins.

Brihadaranyaka 2.4.13. Maitreyi says the words 'no awareness after death' have confused her; Yajnavalkya replies that he is not speaking to confuse, and that this is enough for understanding (he explains in the next unit).
