The priestly power forsakes one who knows it as apart from the Self. The royal power forsakes one who knows it as apart from the Self. The worlds forsake one who knows them as apart from the Self. The gods forsake one who knows them as apart from the Self. Beings forsake one who knows them as apart from the Self. Everything forsakes one who knows it as apart from the Self. This priestly power, this royal power, these worlds, these gods, these beings, this whole universe: all this is this Self.
Social classes named here (brahma, kshatra) are mentioned to say all is one Self; they are by role and conduct, never a ranking by birth.
Meaning today and context
When we treat people and the world as separate objects to hold on to, they keep slipping away from us. Seeing ourselves in them is the only way not to lose them inwardly.
Brihadaranyaka 2.4.6. Yajnavalkya continues: whoever regards anything as existing apart from the Self is abandoned by it, because all of it is the Self.
