Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 2.4.9

2.4.9 Yajnavalkya to Maitreyi

As, when a vina is being played, one cannot catch the sounds going out from it, but by catching hold of the vina, or of the one playing the vina, the sound is caught; [so too, by knowing the Self, all this is known.]

Meaning today and context

Chasing each passing experience, thought or sensation is endless. Turning to their source, the awareness in which they all arise, is what brings understanding.

Brihadaranyaka 2.4.9. Yajnavalkya gives Maitreyi the image of a vina: the passing sounds cannot be grasped one by one, but they are grasped by holding their source. So the many things of the world are known through the Self.
