Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.1.4

3.1.4 Yajnavalkya to Ashvala

yājñavalkyeti hovāca yadidaṃ sarvamahorātrābhyāmāptaṃ sarvamahorātrābhyāmabhipannaṃ kena yajamāno'horātrayorāptimatimucyata iti | adhvaryuṇartvijā cakṣuṣādityena | cakṣurvai yajñasyādhvaryuḥ | tadyadidaṃ cakṣuḥ so'sāvādityaḥ | so'dhvaryuḥ sā muktiḥ sātimuktiḥ ||

'Yajnavalkya,' he said, 'since all this is reached by day and night and overcome by day and night, by what means does the sacrificer free himself beyond the reach of day and night?' 'By the adhvaryu priest, by the eye, by the sun. The eye is the adhvaryu of the sacrifice. This eye is that sun; it is the adhvaryu; it is freedom, it is full freedom.'

Meaning today and context

We live under the pressure of days and nights passing. The verse links our seeing to the sun that makes days: to see clearly is to stand a little outside time's grip.

Brihadaranyaka 3.1.4. Ashvala, Janaka's hotri priest, asks (the question is his) and Yajnavalkya answers: how does the sacrificer go beyond day and night (time)? Through the eye, which is the sun and the adhvaryu priest.
