Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.2.4

3.2.4 Yajnavalkya to Artabhaga

jihvā vai grahaḥ | sa rasenātigraheṇa gṛhītaḥ | jihvayā hi rasānvijānāti ||

The tongue is a grasper. It is gripped by taste, the over-grasper; for it is by the tongue that one knows tastes.

Meaning today and context

The tongue seeks taste, and taste then holds the tongue. Many food habits work exactly like this.

Brihadaranyaka 3.2.4. Yajnavalkya answers Artabhaga: the tongue is a 'grasper' (graha), and it is itself gripped by taste, the 'over-grasper' (atigraha).
