Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.2.8

3.2.8 Yajnavalkya to Artabhaga

hastau vai grahaḥ | sa karmaṇātigraheṇa gṛhītaḥ | hastābhyāṃ hi karma karoti ||

The hands are a grasper. They are gripped by action, the over-grasper; for it is with the hands that one does work.

Meaning today and context

We take up work, and then the work takes hold of us. Busyness can grip us as tightly as any craving.

Brihadaranyaka 3.2.8. Yajnavalkya answers Artabhaga: the hands is a 'grasper' (graha), and it is itself gripped by action (work), the 'over-grasper' (atigraha).
