Then Gargi Vacaknavi questioned him. 'Yajnavalkya,' she said, 'since all this is woven back and forth on water, on what is water woven back and forth?' 'On wind, Gargi.' 'On what is wind woven back and forth?' 'On the worlds of the mid-space, Gargi.' 'On what are the worlds of the mid-space woven?' 'On the worlds of the gandharvas, Gargi.' 'On what are the worlds of the gandharvas woven?' 'On the worlds of the sun, Gargi.' 'On what are the worlds of the sun woven?' 'On the worlds of the moon, Gargi.' 'On what are the worlds of the moon woven?' 'On the worlds of the stars, Gargi.' 'On what are the worlds of the stars woven?' 'On the worlds of the gods, Gargi.' 'On what are the worlds of the gods woven?' 'On the worlds of Indra, Gargi.' 'On what are the worlds of Indra woven?' 'On the worlds of Prajapati, Gargi.' 'On what are the worlds of Prajapati woven?' 'On the worlds of Brahman, Gargi.' 'On what are the worlds of Brahman woven back and forth?' He said: 'Gargi, do not ask too much, or your head will shatter. You are asking too much about a deity beyond which one should not ask. Gargi, do not ask too much.' Then Gargi Vacaknavi fell silent.

'Your head will shatter' is a traditional warning in debate about questioning beyond the limits of reasoning; it is not a threat, and never a reason to silence anyone, especially women, who ask questions. Gargi questions again in 3.8.

Every 'what is this resting on?' can be asked again, and reasoning alone never reaches the last ground. Gargi, a woman questioning the greatest teacher of the court, is honoured by the text: she comes back later and asks the decisive question.

Brihadaranyaka 3.6.1. Gargi Vacaknavi questions Yajnavalkya (the questions are hers) on what each layer of the world is woven upon, climbing up to the worlds of Brahman; Yajnavalkya warns her not to question beyond the limit. She falls silent here, but returns in 3.8.
