1.16 Chanakya

viṣādapyamṛtaṃ grāhyamamedhyādapi kāñcanam | nīcādapyuttamāṃ vidyāṃ strīratnaṃ duṣkulādapi ||

Take nectar even from poison, gold even from filth, the highest knowledge even from a lowly person, and a jewel of a woman even from a humble family.

This verse reflects the prejudices about women of its time. It is not the view of this app, and it must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. Judge each person by their own conduct. Old nīti spoke of family, birth and social class. Worth comes from conduct, never from birth, caste or family background; this verse must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Good knowledge is worth learning from anyone, whatever their status. The lines on 'low' persons and on taking a woman as a 'jewel' reflect the hierarchy and attitudes of its time.

A maxim on taking what is valuable wherever it is found, ending with a line about taking a 'jewel of a woman' even from a lowly family.
