1.4 Chanakya

mūrkhaśiṣyopadeśena duṣṭastrībharaṇena ca | duḥkhitaiḥ samprayogeṇa paṇḍito'pyavasīdati ||

By teaching a foolish pupil, by supporting a wicked woman, and by close association with the wretched, even a wise person comes to grief.

'Wicked woman' reflects its time; read it as any person of harmful conduct, never as a judgement on women. 'The wretched' does not mean people who are grieving or struggling: standing by them is a duty, not a danger.

Some situations drain even capable people: pouring effort into someone who refuses to learn, or binding yourself to people whose conduct is harmful. Recognise when your effort is being wasted.

A list of three situations that drag down even a wise person: teaching a pupil who will not learn, supporting a wicked woman, and close dealings with the perpetually miserable.
