13.19 Chanakya

ekākṣarapradātāraṃ yo guruṃ nā'bhivandate | śvānayoniśataṃ bhuktvā cāṃḍāleṣvabhijāyate ||

One who does not honour a teacher who has given him even a single syllable is born a hundred times as a dog and then among cāṇḍālas.

The verse uses birth among cāṇḍālas as a punishment, reflecting the caste prejudice of its time. Worth comes from conduct, never from birth; this verse must never be used to rank, insult or exclude any community. Respecting teachers also never means tolerating abuse from them.

Behind the harsh words is a sound point: be grateful to everyone who has taught you something, however small.

A harsh traditional threat about disrespecting a teacher, using rebirth as a dog and among cāṇḍālas (a community then treated as outcaste) as the punishment.
