Chanakya Niti 14.1

14.1 Chanakya

ātmāparādhavṛkṣasya phalānyetāni dehinām | dāridrya-roga-duḥkhāni bandhanavyasanāni ca ||

Poverty, disease, sorrow, captivity and calamities: these are the fruits, for embodied beings, of the tree of their own offences.

Do not use this verse to blame people who are poor, ill or suffering; much hardship is not anyone's fault. It is not medical advice: illness needs treatment. If you are weighed down by guilt or despair, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Some of our troubles do grow from our own choices, and honesty about that helps us change. But many hardships come from circumstances, other people or plain chance.

Chanakya traces suffering to one's own wrongdoing, picturing it as a tree whose fruits are hardship.
