A courtesan leaves a man who has lost his money, subjects leave a defeated king, birds leave a tree whose fruit is gone, and a guest leaves the house once he has eaten.

Meaning today and context

Many relationships are held together by benefit and end when the benefit ends. Don't be crushed when such people leave; value the ones who stay without needing anything.

Chanakya observes how those who come for gain leave once it is gone: the courtesan, the subjects of a fallen king, birds, and guests.
