Chanakya Niti 4.1

4.1 Chanakya

āyuḥ karma ca vittañca vidyā nidhanameva ca | pañcaitāni hi sṛjyante garbhasthasyaiva dehinaḥ ||

Lifespan, action, wealth, learning and death: these five are fashioned for an embodied being while it is still in the womb.

This states a traditional belief in destiny. It is never a reason to give up on study, work, medical treatment or care for one's health.

Meaning today and context

Much of what shapes a life, such as our body, family and the times we are born into, we did not choose. Accepting that can bring humility and calm, but elsewhere Chanakya insists just as firmly on effort, study and prudence.

Chanakya states the traditional belief that the main lines of a life are set before birth. It is a general maxim of nīti, not addressed to anyone in particular.
