4.15 Chanakya

anabhyāse viṣaṃ śāstramajīrṇe bhojanaṃ viṣam | daridrasya viṣaṃ goṣṭhī vṛddhasya taruṇī viṣam ||

Scripture is poison without practice; food is poison when [the last meal is] undigested; company is poison to a poor man; a young wife is poison to an old man.

The food line is traditional wisdom, not medical advice; see a doctor for digestive problems. The line on a young wife reflects the attitudes of its time and must not be used to demean anyone.

Meaning today and context

Even good things harm when the conditions are wrong. Learning you never revise turns into confusion, and eating before the last meal is digested makes you ill. Ask whether the time and place are right, not only whether the thing is good.

A list of good things that turn harmful in the wrong conditions. The last line reflects the outlook of its time on marriage.
